The council won the Business Transformation award after the team at the Digital Media Centre were recognised for being a hub for creative and digital businesses, skills and knowledge generating more and better jobs and businesses in Barnsley. The Council then claimed the top prize in the Community Involvement category thanks to Barnsley’s Ward Alliances, who were praised for the work they do in inspiring Barnsley communities to make a real difference.

Barnsley also reached the final in the ‘Team of the Year’ category with its commercial IT service, Code Green, showcasing their dedicated and passionate service, focused on improving  IT services to 12 local authorities, businesses and over 150 schools.

The awards are one of the most prestigious in the local government’s calendar and, with 50 per cent more entries than last year, reaching the final in three categories marks a significant achievement.

Barnsley Council chief executive, Diana Terris, said: “I’m immensely proud to announce that Barnsley competed with the best at the national 2017 Local Government Chronicle Awards and won – twice! Not only does this show that our teams, communities, partners and local businesses are fantastic, but also that our transformation as a council is down to our huge commitment, high standards and even greater ambition.”
