Dr Chris Roast, Reader in the department of Arts, Computing, Engineering & Sciences (ACES)
Dr Roast has been an active researcher in computing for over 20 years, with a focus on applied research that looks at the design of innovative and potentially disruptive technology. His research interests are in human factors and the design of appropriate and acceptable technology for users.
Dr Roast is familiar with the University’s range of computing expertise, and how this can be matched to your business needs.The department has computing researchers in a number of areas, including: robotics, Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, video analysis, the internet of things, security, games and Virtual Reality.
Dr Abhishek Asthana, Reader in the department of Arts, Computing, Engineering & Sciences (ACES)
Dr Asthana is the Director of Hallam Energy, Deputy Director of Doctoral Training Alliance in Energy and a Reader in Energy Engineering. Since joining the University in 2009, he has delivered 48 industrial projects, covering energy research, knowledge transfer and consultancy, and has won £2.4 million in external funding. He has also developed five commercial software packages and invented four patents.
Dr Asthana’s areas of expertise include: industrial energy management, heat recovery from industrial processes, energy in buildings, renewable and conventional power generation, biofuels and biomass, waste to energy, refrigeration, air conditioning, research and development tax credits.
Dr Fin O’Flaherty, Principle Consultant in the department of Arts, Computing, Engineering & Sciences (ACES)
Dr O’Flaherty works in the Centre for Infrastructure Management. Within this research centre, he delivers services for businesses operating in the infrastructure and construction sector. He offers a range of expertise and services such as structural testing, product development, recycling solutions, insulation testing and many more.
The centre has significant expertise in the area of built environment and construction and can offer services including: repair and rehabilitation solutions, building performance and renewable energy technology evaluation, product development, building insulation testing, conservation of heritage structures, materials and recycling solutions, concrete and other testing services.
Professor Paul Stephenson, Head of Research in the department of Development & Society (D&S)
The Department of the Natural and Built Environment has a national and international reputation for our industry-focused research. Their research seeks to understand the impact of social, environmental and economic changes on society, and then to draw on this understanding to contribute to the better design and planning of spaces and places. Ultimately, this leads to the creation, management and maintenance of improved built and natural environments.
The department focusses their research through six internal and informal research groups comprising: construction materials, environment, housing and neighbourhoods, planning, space and place, sustainable design, architecture and construction.
