About The Event

The University of Sheffield’s Dynamics Laboratory for Verification and Validation are running a two-day workshop, which will provide practical modal testing tuition on physical structures. The course will begin with a brief classroom session, covering the aims of modal testing, common methods and typical data acquisition requirements, with the majority of the workshop conducted in the dynamics laboratory. The intention is for each delegate to have the opportunity to set-up and perform both a shaker and hammer test on a range of structures, leaving the workshop with valuable hands-on testing experience and an understanding of how to interpret the subsequent results.

This workshop is for SME’s based in the Sheffield city region. You will be required to complete a registration form shortly after signing up to this event before your place is confirmed.


Day 1: Thursday 25th January 2018

09:00-10:30 Welcome & Introduction to Modal Testing (Why modal testing, common methods, industrial examples, excitation sources)

11:00-12:00 Overview of data acquisition (Touch on LMS, NI, define sample rate, bandwidth, leakage, windowing etc.)

12:00-13:00 Networking lunch

13:00-14:30 Hammer test simple structure (Hammer test of blade, including setting up DAQ, sensor sensitivities etc.)

15:00-16:00 Shaker test simple structure (Shaker test of bookshelf, including setting up DAQ, sensor sensitivities etc.)

16:00 Close

Day 2: Friday 26th January 2018

09:30-10:30 Recap of day 1

11:00-12:00 Setup test on large structure (Setup test on wing structure. Accelerometer placement, wiring, connecting to lms)

12:00-13:00 Networking lunch

13:00-14:30 Shaker test on large structure

15:00-16:00 Explore data (Look at data from wing & mode shapes.)
