Barnsley Council is working with Sheffield City Region to offer support to businesses that are affected by COVID-19 restrictions.
Support packages cover:
- businesses closed due to Tier 3 restrictions.
- businesses in the hospitality & accommodation sectors
- businesses in the supply chain of businesses in hospitality, accommodation, leisure and entertainment sectors which have been forced to close
- wet led pubs – a pub that makes over 50 per cent of their income from the sale of alcohol.
Cllr Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council, said: “A continuation of Tier 3 restrictions for South Yorkshire will no doubt be a devastating blow to the local businesses who cannot open or trade over the festive period.
“It’s essential that we do all we can to control the virus in our borough and save as many lives as we can, but we understand the impact that this approach has on people’s livelihoods. This is why we’re working with partners to provide support to our local businesses affected by the Tier 3 restrictions. I’m really pleased that throughout the pandemic we’ve already provided over £47 million to over 5000 businesses, alongside practical business support and guidance.
“Our message to our residents is that Barnsley is still open for business. We can shop locally and use takeaway/delivery restaurants and other settings safely. We’re encouraging people to continue to support local businesses.
“We’re still in a critical position, and as we’ve seen in the past few months, things can change very quickly. We must all remember that if the transmission of COVID-19 grows again, so will infections, severe illness, hospital pressures and deaths. We need to approach this latest stage in the pandemic as a whole community – it’s down to each and every one of us to look out for each other. However, with the vaccine now being rolled out, there is a positive future to focus on.
